Birthday Special: Sixteen Candles

I was born on June 1st, sometime in the 90's, but my heart has always taken me back to the 80's. The good old American 80's! I listen to Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Bruce Springsteen and Phil Collins. And my absolute favorite movies include Staying Alive, Dirty Dancing, The Breakfast Club and of course my biggest favorite of them all:

I am aware this isn't the official poster, but you might have noticed that I don't
really care about staying official, this way being a bit different from all the
other review sites and blogs.

I was just about to celebrate my 16th birthday when I saw an episode of Scrubs where J.D. says "It was just like that scene from Sixteen Candles.", and I went, what is that? So I got the movie and I decided to see it on my birthday. And I loved it! I already knew the lead actors from other movies of mine, but mostly I loved the story.
Samantha has the misfortune of having her birthday the day before her big sister's wedding. As a result her whole family, from parents along with her siblings all the way to her grandparents, everyone forgets about her sweet sixteen. But that is not all: she has a crush on a boy in school, Jake Ryan. Except he is already seeing one of the popular girls, Caroline, and Sam feels that she has no chance. However, during a dance at their high school The Geek tries to get Sam's attention; he gets nowhere, but Jake notices and the two share notes. Turns out that Jake is very much interested in Sam while The Geek would rather go out with the popular girlfriend of Jake's (with whom he was planning on breaking up anyways). Finally Sam's parents realize how foolish they have been and try to apologize. After the wedding Sam stays at the church last and sees Jake waiting for her. She ditches her dysfunctional family and goes with him. Jake gets her a cake and tells her:

"- Happy birthday Samantha. Make a wish.
- It already came true."

So ever since I was 16, every year I watch this movie on my birthday. Not only I love the directing and the editing, not to mention the very funny dialogues, it also touches everyone because really our biggest fear is someone forgetting our birthday (my best friend has done so for 3 consecutive years!). You can deeply relate to Sam: we all have that magical crush who obviously doesn't know we exist; we all have a crazy family who embarrasses the shit out of us, but we still love them because they are our family and we all want to have the best birthday ever even if we pretend that we don't care so much. It also covers every stereotype of kid in high school: the nerds, the geeks, the weirdos, the foreigner, the average normal unnoticed, the populars and the jocks. Meaning you can find yourself among the characters. And being the story itself a fairy tale, you find yourself rooting for the main character. All girls dream of prince charming, and after a shitty birthday like that, Sam even deserved it more than any of us, so there is a sense of relief when the two come together. Finally note is the music, which simply blows you away! The timing, the lyrics, all of it clicks perfectly together!

My favorite John Hughes and Molly Ringwald co-production movies all have this affect on me. Starting from Pretty in Pink all the way to The Breakfast Club. They are all down to earth and yet share a magic that brings the stories above all others.
I also happened to notice that movies which story takes place within 48 hours, always appeal to me more. Another example of such would be Empire Records, even though that was made in the 90's.
Unfortunately I can say that this movies isn't for everyone. I can think of several people, even among my friends, who's humor isn't set for these kinds of movies. What can I say? We are a different generation. It is no wonder they keep remaking classics: they are trying to appeal to the kids of the 21st century! But there is a magic to the originals that cannot be compared to anything. I am sure that none of you will watch this movie just because I told you so, but trust me if I tell you that you will have a hard time finding something wrong with this movie! It is no wonder that such great shows like One Tree Hill made a whole episode just in memory of the wonderful John Hughes! He literally touched the hearts of every American, and then on everyone one the planet who had the fortune of seeing one of his movies.

Anyway, that is all I wanted to say, now I'm going to take a bit of time off, it is my birthday tomorrow and I have one more week of exams and afterwards it is full on Comics Summer! Don't miss out!

You all take care now! and, well

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME! :D

What's Next On My List? Like Crazy

Recently... precisely three minutes ago I finished watching a movie:

This story is about Anna, a British college student, who on her stay in America falls for a boy named Jacob. Unfortunately because of love, she overstays her visa and is then banned from the US. The two lose touch for a while, until Jacob goes to see her in London. They spend every second each other, with the hope that they will be together soon. However, being realistic, they see other people, because the feeling of being alone is unbearable. A young girl, Sam, falls for Jacob while Anna finds herself in the arms of her neighbor, Simon. Despite all that, the two decide to get married, so Anna can apply for a new visa, possibly a citizenship as well. The two get into an argument about the people they have been seeing while being apart from each other. Jacob goes back home, literally back to Sam, while Anna moves in with Simon. However, when Simon proposes, her visa seems to be in place and she goes back to Jacob, only to realize that the fire between them has burnt out.

Thoughts? I didn’t like it. First of all, the two main characters resemble high school students, and even though in the passing of the movie they show us how much they have grown, how adult they’ve become, I still find that they were portrayed too young in the beginning. Secondly, I am pretty sure that this movie was supposed to be a kind of protest against the immigration borders in the US, because to be honest, all the things they put Anna through was plainly ridiculous. She is not allowed back in for, I believe three years was it, maybe six, actually the passing of time wasn’t quite clear either! Most importantly, I didn’t understand the fact that they both flip out at the idea that the other might sleep with someone else, yet they still do it.
Honestly it isn’t clear why they lose touch. Of course you can’t keep up a relationship if you are not in contact with the person you ought to be. And then to just string along those two idiots who happen to have fallen in love with you while you love someone else is plainly cruel. After their wedding  as I said, they fight and Jacob leaves her. I honestly thought that they got divorced, because her visa is denied again; she moves in with Simon, Jacob gets Sam back and it seems that they are over. But then Anna texts him and when Simon proposes to her, she goes back to America. Why is she allowed back in? There is a scene where we see that she allowed back in, but the reasons for it are not really explained. Also Simon emphasizes that he knows that there are many things that have to be "figured out", but he still wishes her to marry him. I suppose that he was referring to her marriage, which implies that he knew he was just the other guy. Still Jacob doesn't want to move to London, and Anna can't go back. And I don't get, why wouldn't they get divorced if clearly Jacob would rather see other people.
What amazed me more than everything is that every time Anna got a promotion or she got ahead in her job, she just called up Jacob. But not to tell him, like he is the first person she wanted to share her successes with, just cause.
In the end there were several beautiful scenes, but there were occasions where I think that the director thought that the images would speak for themselves, when actually they didn't. Anna was going back to London, but instead they went to the coast and stayed in a hotel. Why? Why where they there? She was supposed to leave the next day, and yet the next day they just took this trip where it seemed that she was studying, but supposedly they have already graduated. Or did they? I really have no idea. I just have all of these questions of things that I don't get. And in the end you could always hide them behind the fact that you wouldn't know how you would behave if you had to live away from the one you love, hence their actions are all justified. But to me they are not, because I know that that isn't the way I would act.

What did I like?
Alex Kingston and Oliver Muirhead. As always I only wanted to see this movie for two reasons: an actress and I liked the trailer. The trailer was already silly, but in this case it summarized perfectly the movie. As far as the actress go, you may all know Alex Kingston from ER, she played Dr. Elizabeth Corday and perhaps from Doctor Who were she plays River Songs. She is one of my favorite British actresses. I literally try to get my hands on everything she is in. In this movie she played Anna's mother Jackie. It was incredibly touching how she just tried to be helpful in all of this, instead of telling her daughter that this story is foolish and that she should be looking for someone she can actually be with. Her parents are all for real love and for her happiness. They are happy for literally anything she does, they even visit her in America once. Basically they are the dream parents. I would like to see a movie about them alone!

Final thoughts? It isn't as bad as I make it out to be, there really are some beautiful scenes in it. Also the story isn't that bad, there is something incredible interesting about how bad the American bureaucracy actually is. There really should be something done about the immigration. But, that is an issue for another day. If you have an hour and a half check it out, maybe you'll like it or you'll find something I missed.

Until the next item on my list! Also, Comics Summer is just around the corner!

Blogger: Grey's Anatomy 8th Season Finale

I saw another finale this week...

The 8th season finale has evoked some anger issues in me. I apologize. But seriously, WTF?!!

Update 2017.06.19: Since then I have stopped watching the series all together. It was after Derek Shepherd died I would like to emphasize here that it wasn't because he was killed off, but because of how they did it. This TV show likes to consider itself smart by always throwing shit into your face that yells "THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU INN REAL LIFE!!! IT IS UNEXPECTED, SOMEONE YOU LOVE COULD DIE RIGHT NOOOOOW!!", and I made my peace with that. However, his death was simply dumb. Let us put him in an empty corner of a road in a car accident that he survives only to be hit by a truck 3 hours later on the same deserted road... no. That DOES NOT happen no matter how unlucky you are or mysterious God's ways are... I'm sorry. It is simply for effect and it does nothing to me other than make me mad, so I am done with this show for good.

CONFESSIONS OF AN ETERNAL PLAYBOY

Can't get you out of my mind,
This desperation is driving me blind.
It is the hugs and kisses I miss
And the scent of that perfume I can't dismiss.
"It is your heart that I want."
"I could bend you with my thumb."*
But there's the cage
In which you encase
Your own feelings and the desire,
As you are stronger than I:
Capable of refusing love even from the one you admire.
You cause me such drought, I'll die
Without the hope of having you just one last time,
Hold you, feel you, enchant you with my rhymes.
Touch that silky skin of white marble,
Rediscover your curves and that harbor,
That makes even the strongest of voices tremble,
Just like that fiery night... do you remember?
If I refused to give you up, so
That every time we meet I could ask for more...
Could you bare me as a part of your life,
Even if I can't promise to make you a wife?
Although this feeling is great,
I just can't see straight.
No, I don't want your heart, how could I?
Wishing for love by force should be a crime,
Love doesn't work like eye-for-an-eye!
It's not something that can be settled with a bribe.
It is your body that I want.
Your hands, and legs, and hear your lungs,
As I caress your breasts...
I just don't care about all the rest!
Why can't you give me the satisfaction?
Of being caught up in the action?
Why so concerned with protecting that flower
When you have a trustworthy buyer?
If only I could hug you once more...
My body wouldn't feel so sore.

My Poems: Drunken At An Oldhillers Concert

The inspiration for this poem is quite painful. So it is not included on the poems page of my blog anymore. But I am not in the business of rewriting history, so it is still available, for any who want to read it.

DRUNKEN AT AN OLDHILLERS CONCERT

I thought I was over it,
I guess I was wrong...
We didn't even talk, yet missing you
Feels strong
Where are you?
I wonder.
What are you doing, I ponder
I love you, and I hate it
It's not fair, and I don't need it!
Why can't I move on, well actually, You haven't either
Otherwise you would've said "hello"
and it would've been a no-brainer!
You look nice, I gotta tell you
Like the new look
Mostly because I can relate to.
Or at least I think I can...
I never really understood your deal and that hasn't changed.
Although I feel that we've become even more estranged...
Then the Hillers reminded me
"You're not the one for me".

What's next on my list? Public Enemies

Have you ever been to the theater and you see a really good trailer and you have to ask yourself, what is this? I want more, oh my the actors, I want more! Where can I get more? In my case one of these was:

However, trailers lie. Dear God, how bad this was... imdb gave it a 7.0 rating, let me tell you, that's bull shit! But let us dive into it right away.
According to the summary: "The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s." OK, first mistake, spoiler coming up, Pretty Boy Floyd dies in the first ten minutes. I am not even kidding with you, Channing Tatum fans, you are allowed to skip this one! Second problem, I couldn't even tell you who the hell Baby Face Nelson was, that is how much I didn't care about the movie, while watching it!

OK, so the story is more focused on Dillinger alone. He meets a girl one night, Billie Frechette  and the two fall in love. Unfortunately the police, Melvin Purvis, uses her to get to him. It is quite ironic but in the end it isn't her who leads them to him. But Dillinger is portrayed as the good guy, or at least the movie tries to do that, but fails horribly at it. Nowhere does the concept of robbing banks with guns is portrayed in a fashionable or fancy way. I am not sure if the movie wanted to stay impartial, or if the movie chose a side. Mainly because the love story would draw the viewer onto Dillinger's part, but then you are reminded of the bank robbery and you think, yeah... maybe the police is better. And then you see a horrible performance by Christian Bale and you decide that you'd rather see a movie with Marion Cotillard alone, preferably without any of these guys! Or stories... Of course I cannot object Johnny Depp's performance, he is Johnny Depp after all. He waswonderful, as always, but in the long run he did not save this movie for me.
Alright, besides bad performances the biggest problem was the music. Or at least it would've been, IF THERE WAS ANY IN IT!! WHERE IS THE MUSIC?? There was one seen in particular where the bad guys and the police had a showdown in the forest in the middle of the night... do you know what happens there? I sure as hell didn't! Everything is black, literally, and every 10 seconds somebody started shooting. Now, this darkness would make me fall asleep, but the repetitive gun shots just startled me every single time. And music is generally used to keep the viewer alert, interested, curious even. Now imagine the most boring thing you could ever watch. And I mean the most boring thing. This scene is worse than that. And this wasn't the only scene like this, every action scene is a funeral over here... Remember the lyrics from Depeche Mode "Words like violence, break the silence"? Well not in this movie they don't! Anyway, there are a couple of songs and very touching scenes in it, but it is over two hours long and the good scenes alone would've made it into a 45 minute beautiful short.

Let me just point out other things that I didn't understand. Purvis is sent after Dillinger and he proves to be a very good detective. He gets Dillinger several times, but he always escapes. How? I mean really, don't you find that perhaps in this special case putting a couple of more agents on him would prove to be beneficial? Also, when Billie is apprehended an officer beats her to get the information on Dillinger's whereabouts. Purvis gets mad, because he would never hit a woman (or at least I think that is the reason). Pretty much all the initial anger he had to get Dillinger feels like is totally lost in the wind by the time he gets around the only person who might help him. Throughout the story many of Dillinger's accomplices die, but there are some that simply got lost during the movie and I have no idea where they have gone. It probably wasn't important, but there is an initial scene where Dillinger breaks out his mates from prison and his mates are scattered everywhere by the end of the movie. Should we care? Does anybody really? Perhaps the writer should've...
And lastly the scene that drove me crazy: Dillinger takes his friend to the police station and he goes in. He waltzes around the special operations room prepared to apprehend and arrest him. He sees his mugshot, that of his friends, locations, maps, everything the police ever dug up on him. He then asks a couple of cops in the corner watching TV the score of the game they are seeing. One of them looks at him and nothing. There is a secretary in the background typing, a guy at a table next to him and... nothing. Nada. Niente, NOBODY NOTICES HIM!!! Are you kidding me? Is this like a teaser or something, why doesn't anybody see him? Where exactly are those 300 cops that were in there a couple of hours ago? But most importantly, seeing all the documents Dillinger should've noticed that he was being set up by his friends and that therefore you'd think he wouldn't be stupid enough to go to the one place where he knows they are going to catch him! Or if he didn't know, what was the point of that scene? Did he want to get caught? There is something implied about the fact that without Billie his life isn't important, which is all well, but should we immediately assume that he wished to be caught? Moreover shot in the head? I don't know. This movie is stupid.
I understand that it is a fascinating story, but perhaps you should've told it in a way that keeps people interested. Secondly, the idea of approaching every side of it, including the boring ones, was a fatal mistake. At the end there are a couple of sentences on what happened to the real people portrayed in the movie and it says that Melvin Purvis took his own life with a gun after the proceedings. I would've comprehended his pain better if Bale didn't look like he was constipating through the whole movie... just saying....

General idea? Don't watch it. If you are a Depp, Bale or Cotillard fan, trust me there are plenty of better movies out there. This isn't one of them.

Until the next item on my list!

PS: Diana Krall was in this? Where? Seriously, where?!
