Blogger: Happy Birthday

Dear Readers,
yes, I am selfish enough to congratulate myself on having lived another year. This is the first entry in this segment, so you'll just have to deal with what I have to say: I LOVE BIRTHDAYS!
Why? Well, to start off with, I never really understood people who don't like their birthdays and want to keep their age a secret. You know, unless they are vampires or they actually managed to stop time at one point and are now upset that it didn't last very long: Aging is part of life - essentially it is what life is all about. And if you are not aging, let me tell you that something is awfully wrong with you! You should see a doctor right away!
That said, I make it my personal mission to make my friends' birthdays as memorable as possible. Unfortunately, most of them don't share my passion, so I often don't get anything - but I'll talk about that later.
Since I can remember I tried to always build something for my friends or get them something I remembered them telling me they wanted. Unfortunately I have way too many friends who don't like personally made gifts... So I try and buy sometimes and balance between the two big groups. Last year, I bought a pink light saber for my best friend - one time I organized a sort of scavenger hunt with letters and clues, I make pearl animals and design birthday cards that remind the birthday girl or boy of something special. And surprise parties! Oh my god, I love surprises! I think it is wonderful when you realize that not only your friends remembered your birthday, but they were actually planning something for it in advance!
This has changed over the years unfortunately, mostly due to facebook. And even that sometimes doesn't help because my guy best friend managed to forget me one year... And it was really horrible! Being forgotten is about the only fear I have in life... And you know it is in these times that you understand the sentence "It's the thought that counts!" - even if people just write onto your facebook wall and don't spend a penny, you still feel appreciated.

Last year I told you all about how ever since my sweet sixteen on the day of my birthday I re-watch one of my favorite movies: Sixteen Candles (click on the picture above to read my review!). This year I want to tell you about the little rituals I have on my special day.
First of all, I like to go to cemetery to see my grandparents. I grew up with only one grandmother and it's always been my wish to know my grandparents - I know its an impossible wish, but I still feel closer to them this way. Second, each year I do something significant (to me at least!). When I was 16, I watched this movie for the first time and I listened to Neil Sedaka's Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen.
The following year I got my left ear pierced. It was awful, I fainted and the 2 meter tall bald guy who was piercing it had to slap me conscious with his latex glove. Good times :D Either way, I went home and I listened to Abba's Dancing Queen ("Young and sweet, only seventeen!').
For my 18th birthday I got a small Pilsner keg from my folks and I did my graduate exam in English and Italian - and as dorky and eager-beaver as that may sound, it was a huge accomplishment for me. The following year I did another graduate exam, this time German and when I was 20 I finished high school, which was humoungos for me!
I usually buy myself something small, like a book or sunglasses - just so I get a present from other than my parents. This year I'm going to go to the theater to see the sixth movie in the The Fast And The Furious franchise with my best friend. (Click the picture to read my previous reviews!) Last but not least I made myself a picture. As you know, I love comics and mangas, so I created myself a card with all of my favorites in comics style. My song this year is from Switchfoot Let That Be Enough ("It's my birthday tomorrow, no one here can now. I was born this Thursday, 22 years ago.")

I hope I could persuade you to not be ashamed of your age and enjoy your birthday AND persuade others to enjoy it as well :D It is the one day in the year that is all about you! Don't try to hide it or act as if you were ashamed. Because being alive is awesome! We get to see the new Star Trek movie, or watch the sunset, feel salty sea water on our skin and you know, watch the new Star Trek movie :D (seriously, watch the new Star Trek movie!)
So, sorry but I have to :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

What's Next On My List? The Fast And The Furious Franchise

This being my favorite series of all time, I am going to talk about all the movies, before we head into the next installment of the franchise. I am going to see it very soon and I am plenty excited!

Brian O'Conner is an undercover cop who befriends the Toretto family, in order to discover whether or not they are behind a crime. They actually are, and their team steals goods from trucks on the road. However, during the last heist, things go bad and Brian - after having fallen in love with Mia Toretto, helps them out.
After leaving Dominic Toretto run, he too runs away to avoid being prosecuted by his own team. I loved this movie - this in particular focused a lot more on the illegal racing world and I really liked that world. Brian could be happy with them. And the racing?  This was a great beginning to the franchise. Growing up I collected car models and I preferred them a lot more than dolls. I was actually the one who went with my dad when he wanted to buy a new car! Either way, the story had a great cast, good setup - for a time there I was sure that they had the wrong family and that kept me even more excited. Trying to figure out what was going on, and also sensing frustration from Brian who clearly had fallen in love with Mia - and his face once he realized that it was indeed Dominic who masterminded the heists... priceless! This is a great movie.

After running away from the police, Brian hides away in Miami. He is sought out by his old boss, who promises him and an old friend of his a pardon if they help out getting a criminal. He asks for the help of his old friend Roman Pierce and together they bring the criminal to justice.
I'll tell you, I loved this movie. It was actually the first one I saw at my friends house, it was only a couple of years later - from the DVD extras - that I've found out this was a sequel. The story is great, again the cars were off the hook and all of the actors delivered. There are several intense moments as well that leave your jaw dropped. I also think that it was a worthy follow-up. Brian stays true to his character and the addition of a lady cop, that being Eva Mendes who simply blew me away in this movie was a great choice. This I think was a worthy sequel, obviously the public doesn't share my opinion, based on the ratings, but I think it was just overlooked because there is no Vin Diesel in it.

We have a new hero, Sean, a young boy who after facing police arrest for the Nth time, is sent to Japan by his mom to live with his dad. Although a big fan of car racing, he finds a new way of racing he doesn't have any experience with. He gets help by an American boy and a guy who seems to know his way around town, Han. He hires Sean to do some work for him and in exchange he teaches him about drifting. The movie comes to an end with Sean defeating the current Drift King and being accepted by the community and receiving a challenge from an unknown man. We see that it is Dominic Toretto who claims to have known Han.
Wow, people really hated this movie! I mean, it was insane! And I didn't get why... I mean, I see that they wanted the old cast back and that they didn't really care much for Sean, but it was still a great movie. I am a huge fan of Japanese culture and for me it was a blast. Did I miss the old crew? Of course I did, but seeing Diesel at the end of the movie completely threw me off and it was an awesome surprise. Not to mention that this was the first movie of the series that I saw in the theatre and it was all in great fun! I think that people who have grown to love Han in the last two movies might want to re-watch and approach it differently - who knows, maybe you'll like it more now!

Fast And Furious
People went crazy for this movie. Putting Diesel at the end of the third made them realize that the public actually craved for more Dominic and Brian action. So in the first movie we are introduced once again to Brian, who now works for the FBI and is trying desperately to bring a drug lord to justice. His and Dominic's path meet again when it turns out that Dom's love Letty has been killed by the same drug lord. Dominic helps Brian - however the latter is incapable of arranging a pardon for Dominic and he sent to prison for life. The movie finishes with him and Mia heading to rescue him.
This movie made me PISSED OFF! First of all, yeah I was very happy this was coming out, but from the old crew there was a total number of two characters whom I liked very much (guess who dies in the fifth movie...), and when this movie first appeared on imdb the plot summary was "Dominic and Brian team up to take down Letty's murderer." WHAT?! No! Don't kill Letty! And when the summary changed, I thought, uh, thank God, they didn't take that direction after all! ... F*ck you. Still, it was great to get back my favorite characters and there was even place for romance :)

This story is special because it follows directly where the fourth ended. We see that Brian and Mia rescued Dominic and are now headed to Rio - where they seek the help of an old friend - Vincent from the first movie. (He was my love, and, well yeah...) He would, but upon arrival, they all see that the citizen are being crashed by a tyrant and they decide to stick around and help out - show him who is really boss. Hobbs who would do anything to get Dominic back behind bars. It works to their advantage, that the tyrant kills Hobbs men as well, not just Vincent, and in the end he lends them a hand in defeating him. They fled anyway, and the movie ends with agent Hobbs receiving a photo that proves that Letty is still very much alive.
Unfortunately they are followed by an USA agent by the name of
There was about 4 of us in the cinema when I saw the movie, and after the very last scene I almost started to scream. Like an idiot, I wanted to scream I was so happy! Let alone the fact, that the cop who brings the photo to Hobbs was Eva Mendes - I already reached euphoria at that point - but then the picture? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! Awesome :D Either way, the movie changed a bit and instead of focusing on the racing, there was a 'perfect crime' in it. And I love those! My favorite movies like that are Inside Man, Ocean's Eleven and Twelve and so on. Cars, cast, story - they literally hit it off the park for me. The Rock was a great addition to the cast.

So, my next time at theatre will be to see the sixth installment. And what better way to enjoy my birthday than watching my two favorite guys rescue Letty? :)
Until the next item on my list!

What's Next On My List? Firefly + Serenity

The glorious time has come, six days prior to my first exam, to watch for the first time a series that has been recommended to me far too many times for me to count.

The first thing that popped into my mind was: Cowboy Bebop. That is an anime set in the future where two friends, Spike and Jet become bounty hunters after leaving behind a past that we discover over the run of 26 episodes.
They are joined by a dog, Ein; a woman, Fay Valentine; and a real genius on the territory of modern technology, a little girl by the name of Ed. With the difference being that the anime characters are actually on the right side of the law - everything from music, to the conflicts among characters, to the mystery behind every person and just generally the awesomeness that comes with a science fiction story that doesn't have aliens, but just humans - the two series are really similar. So, if I loved Cowboy Bebop, I was bound to love Firefly too.

I didn't. OK, I'm just kidding with you, I did like it very much!
There was something to it that I couldn't quite put my hands on in the beginning. Then my sister said something and it was then that I finally got it - it is real. This view of the future is dead on in my opinion. If I think about how gun control sucks in the US, and how famine and unemployment have reached numbers that are not even comprehensible anymore! Also, prostitution becoming a tasteful employment is also very likely to happen in my opinion... Let us not forget also the fluctuations in the weather - surely in a couple of centuries we will either die out or be smart enough to leave this planet.
So what got me hooked? People's problems aren't going to change anytime soon. Trust issues, marriage, love, secrets, all of it will very much stay alive and the series doesn't try to rewrite basic human nature. It isn't trying to send that one precise message that I HATE in every single movie that is set in the future - that men's end will come at the hand of men. (Think of In Time, read my review here! And all of these environmental bullshits and so on.) That is another reason why I love both Star Wars and Star Trek: The future doesn't have to be dark and gloomy and depressed! Yes, undoubtedly, when our sun stops to shine, we will have a few issues - but light is a basic source for humans - that will be surely the first thing we will try and repair.

More into detail on the show. Captain Malcolm Reynolds is an ex-sergeant who survived in the war between the Alliance (who now govern most of their galaxy) and the Rebellion - fighting on the side of the latter. His right hand Zoë survives with him and together they start their own little company. Captain buys a kind of ship that resembles fireflies and he names it Serenity. Together with a pilot, Wash (who is Zoë's husband), Cap's left hand Jayne Cobb and a mechanic Kaylee, they travel around the galaxy and do jobs for people that are illegal - just to piss off the Alliance. They of course make sure to partake in legal activities as well, to maintain their cover, one of these being transport. The last addition to the crew is Inara Serra, a registered companion who rents one of the shuttles on the ship - she is also called 'Ambassador', because when they face legal troubles, she usually helps them out.
One day, a young doctor, Simon Tam and a Shepherd by the name of Book choose their vessel for their travels. We find out that Simon has a frozen girl with her, who turns out to be his sister River. We don't know why, but she seems altered. She had attended a school for gifted, sponsored by the Alliance, and then something changed in her. Simon rescued her before she was lost forever - however, the Alliance is after them, because it seems that River knows too much, even though we don't know what. Against his better judgement, Captain Malcolm decides to let them stay, seeing that they do need a doctor and River doesn't seem to be a danger to anyone - in the beginning...

The series got cancelled unfortunately, which I am pretty sure you all knew already. I think that one of the reasons for that could've been that THEY DIDN'T AIR THE EPISODES IN ORDER! THEY AIRED THE PILOT AFTER 10 EPISODES! WHAT KIND OF A F*CKED UP IDIOT DOES THAT?! NO WONDER NOBODY GOT INVESTED, YOU LOSERS! And it also ended without shining any light on what actually happened to River. Thankfully we have the movie for that, but I'll dissect that later on. Either way, I really liked this series, beside the reasons mentioned above, for the small story-lines in each episode. They were all different, and they continued! Everything done in the previous episode would be referred to in the next - even if just with a sentence. And that doesn't happen often in series, while here it helped me be more up to date with the characters and care for their troubles.
I did have problems, particularly with the last episode - beside that one thing bothered me and that was Zoë and Wash - I LOVED THEM! I wanted much-much more of them. Yes, I understand that the series got cancelled and we should be thankful for getting even as much as we did. I am also certain that there was actually plenty of space to show more of them!
Anyway, I want to dissect that last episode, as in number 14 "Objects is space". Our crew is followed by a bounty hunter who, let me tell you was the most ridiculous character I have ever seen on tape. That Michael Jackson Thriller outfit didn't do much justice to this hunter who we were supposed to fear - although the setup was great, you do shit your pants by the idea of someone unknown following you to where you thought you were alone. But then he starts talking and -- you totally lost me. That was a horrible casting choice! Just awful! And that isn't my problem either with the episode! We begin with pretty clear signs of River being psychic, but then she hallucinates and believes to have picked up a branch, which was actually a gun. I am not even going to question what the hell was that gun doing on the floor in the middle of the cargo bay - I am more curious to find out how she became completely lucid.
She hears them talk about her and the next time we hear about her she talks clearly, doesn't mumble, doesn't worry - she laughs around, she has fun, and I mean seriously what the hell? Our crew goes to sleep, undecided on whether or not they should dump Simon and River, and just when this problem comes up, she immediately is healed - OK not healed, but you get what my problem is! Perhaps if we had a couple more scenes during the episodes previously were she talks a lot more clearly, instead of just a couple of clear words, then I wouldn't be bothered so much. Otherwise, I feel like something was missing there.

That said, watch the series, NOW! You have nothing to lose and only plenty to gain! These are lovable, down to earth characters, great stories and if you love sci-fi then you won't be disappointed.

That being said, let us talk about the much needed ending to the series. Three years later, based on the fan base and the DVD sells, creators realized that the reason why this series got cancelled wasn't because people didn't like it - actually, it was because the executives at FOX are major dickheads. So the idea of a movie came about, and after all the actors were on board, we received:

Oh, boy. I hated it. Do forgive me if I offend you or your opinion. I can clearly see why people love it and it was a great ending - I am not going to argue with that. Also, the fans deserved this movie very-very much so I am glad it got made, but for me, it just totally missed the target - OK, not completely, but the two things that just pissed me off ruined the whole movie for me. I actually didn't do much research into this entry, so I am sure that I will be tackling a couple of things that others have already discussed. Not to mention that the movie came out 8 years ago - there isn't much new I can say. Still, I want to say it.
First off - the title? Second, there was a total amount of ONE single question I wanted an answer to and that wasn't really answered.
The story is changed a bit - which of course is understandable - we have to take into consideration that there is a whole new audience and a 90 minute mark. Here, Simon rescues River during an experiment, so he knows that she has been trained to become an assassin by the Alliance. Also, Captain hasn't warmed up to them like he did in the series, so instead of thinking of them as part of the crew, he has apparently no problem with kicking them out. River is at one point triggered by a subliminal message 'Miranda' and she starts to fight a whole bar - and kicking everyone's ass.
In the meanwhile a killer, the Operative, is sent after them. He stops at nothing - he sets a trap using Inara, he almost kills Captain with two hands and even follows them to the end of the galaxy, meanwhile killing every last friend that the crew has made in the galaxy - leaving them no place to hide. It is at that point, that River shows the crew what Miranda is - a planet that has been deemed inhabitable by the Alliance, and what is beyond a territory where Reavers park (men who have gone crazy, eat human flesh and rape people). But the idea of the Alliance wanting to hide this planet so bad makes Captain even more curious and they find a way there. It turns out, that the Alliance was testing a gas on the people in the planet, which at first slowed them down and then killed them. However, 20% had a different reaction - these are now known as Reavers.
Understanding that this was what the Alliance feared River knew, they go out of their way to transmit video footage of this to the public - giving them once again courage to rebel.

"Two by two, hands are blue." This was a sentence River uttered, and we found out that agents who wore blue gloves were after her. Now, who the hell were they? Yes, they were sent by the Alliance, but they were far more creepy than the Operative ever was! The fact that these men had ultra-sound gadgets that could blow up your brain, were a lot cooler then the samurai sword that dude was fidgeting with. Really, the only thing I wanted to know was how they came about, what division they were from and so on. But nope.
Instead we got a character who was just as annoying as the bounty hunter - yippy-di-do! Because I totally wanted more of him! My sister put it perfectly, we hate the kind of characters who don't ask questions. He says he does this because it is his job, end of story. HUMAN BEINGS DON'T WORK LIKE THAT! He calls himself a monster and then he tries to argue with Captain, saying he is weak because he has feelings - so his weapon against him is using his humanity - so he knows about it and understands it. Yet, he not once thought about stopping to ask - Erm sorry, why do we need to kill her again? That is why I liked the blue hand guys! They clearly looked like doctors/agents who have worked with River. Another thing that proved he is very smart was the fact that Cap didn't kill him. He knew that once he saw what secret the Alliance held, he would stop - and he did! How could this clever guy not slow down once? Who knows what secrets she holds and who knows what kind of a threat she is! Adding this new character was somewhat pointless. (In case you are wondering about the pattern - I am not racist. I like Chiwetel Ejiofor very much! My problem is with the script, not the actors!)

The other thing, and really, that was what completely blew my mind and I wanted to start to scream was when Wash died. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THAT?! In that moment a sentence came to my mind that my brother said when we watched the Avengers (click here to read my review) "Oh, I forgot that Whedon has to kill somebody." after the death of Agent Coulson. And you know what a death like this is? F*CKING POINTLESS!!! Look how much good killing Coulson did to you, you idiot, you had to revive him after less than a year! I ask again, WHAT WAS THE F*CKING POINT? Being a starter script writer I know that when I kill somebody, it is purely out of laziness. I don't know how to end the story, I have a surplus, I am in lack of ideas and that is the same thing I felt here. I didn't feel that he died a hero, I didn't feel that his death was in ANY way justified! What I felt is that you have a character like Zoë, who has (barely) survived a war and God knows how many adventures and just when she will finally get peace both in her heart and mind you took away the ONLY thing stable she had in her life - making her unhappy for unknown days to come. Screw you Whedon!

Watch the movie? Yes. Yes, because it did have the ending that the series would've and it was great to see it. Watch it also because I am 100% sure that if this series would've come out just 10 years later, then it would've run for at least three seasons, if not more. I also blame FOX for - literally everything. This didn't deserve to be cancelled, and even after ten years it is still as awesome and creative and fun and enthralling as it was the first time it came out.

Until the next item on my list!

Me, my sister and my brother have a sort of quarrel over which television creator/writer/director revolutionized television series. My sister, lover of Alias always goes with JJ Abrams. My brother strongly believes that it was Joss Whedon without a doubt. I personally think that is was the brains of Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow, creators of 24 who finally gave us something outstanding. Then again, these three series came out the same year - so I think we are all right in the matter. However, I am pretty sure that for FOX 24 was a stronger contender to beat ABC's Alias, instead of Firefly. In the end, they got the short end of the stick in every matter!

FRESH FROM THE THEATRE: Star Trek - Into Darkness 3D

NO SPOILERS YET: I am here to tell you that you are going to read a couple of negative criticism about this movie. Let me tell you that I never listen to critics myself prior to watching a movie, because I hardly find anyone who shares my opinion (unless when they talk about Adam Sandler movies... they are usually dead on then!). So I got up, dragged my ass to the cinema and had a wonderful time! The movie is great, the actors... oh dear god they are off the hook! You might get more references from the old series, but I who has NEVER seen a single episode of the old ones still adore this new series and I can't wait to see more. If you think I am exaggerating and I can't recognize when something is wrong - I'll be dissecting the movie further now - but if you want to avoid spoilers just trust me when I say, even if you end up not liking it: Let that be your choice and not someone else's! GO SEE THE MOVIE!

That said, let me tell you about the first movie in which I actually and genuinely enjoyed the 3D!

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON! Kirk and his team are on a dangerous mission, that at first causes him to be demoted, but after the Star Fleet Headquarters are bombed and his superior dies, he gets back the command of the USS Enterprise.
He asks permission to go after the man who is responsible for the attack - someone known by the name of John Harrison. They track him down on a Klingon planet, which is enemy territory, and when they find him - he surrenders. Once he is on the USS Enterprise, they discover that he is a three-hundred year old superhuman who was frozen and has now been awaken by Admiral Marcus. Harrison reveals that his name is Khan and that the admiral means to destroy him and his crew of 72 people still asleep in pods that have been transformed into missiles.
Kirk helps Khan defeat the Admiral, as he threatens to destroy the Enterprise and its crew. But Khan betrays him as he has no boundaries and wishes to stop at nothing to get his crew back. Spock tricks him and the USS Enterprise is almost lost when in the last minute Kirk sacrifices himself to save the ship. He is then revived with Khan's blood and Khan is stopped by Spock, putting him back to sleep. Kirk gives a beautiful speech were he recites the oath he took when he became captain and his crew sets out to conquer space.

Where can I begin? I wasn't a big fan of the old Star Trek franchise, as I mentioned above. I do love science fiction and well this casting speaks to me a lot more than the old one did. So when I saw the first one in the theater I knew I was hooked. It has been four long years, but for me personally it was totally worth the wait! I also liked that despite its success they didn't just throw together a stupid sequel that has no beginning, middle or end. This story - for me - was completely thought through, the characters were true to themselves and the little but very much needed comedic bits were hilarious! And even if we all knew that Cumberbatch's character would turn out to be Khan, the moment when he reveals his name still gave me chills!
Also, they gently set up the Klingon planet which will hopefully came back in the future. One criticism was that this movie used a lot more references to the original series and personally I didn't feel like it was forced at all. It might have bothered me if it had points that could not be followed but that problem never occurred. Personally the only thing that I've found a bit forced was that they managed to save Kirk. His death was very beautifully done, but the minute that Spock ran after Khan I immediately remembered that he has super blood so I knew were it would go. And in the end I didn't mind simply because I trust J.J. Abrams. Think of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D - do you like it that Joss Whedon resurrected Agent Coulson? I don't. I think it is stupid but there is always the argument that they keep doing it in comics. I just hope they give a good enough reason for it... Anyway, I would've hated it far too much if the third movie would begin with the resurrection of Kirk - here at least there was a built up to the possibility of it.
Another thing I wanted to mention - just on the subject of trusting Abrams - Spock calls up his older self and asks him about Khan. The older one says that they managed to defeat him but at a very high price. Now, the viewer might think that it was the death of Kirk - but he was resurrected and the old one must have known that. And putting him back in his pod to sleep isn't exactly the same as being defeated! So I believe that this story will still continue or at least there is the possibility to continue it and I am very excited about that. And the reason for my excitement is none other than the person who I hope will win this year's award for 'Villain of the year': Benedict Cumberbatch.
It's very funny to me that the only reason I watch these movies is usually the villain. In the first one I loved Eric Bana and in this one, well... let me tell you that I would gladly volunteer to be killed by Khan if he was played by Cumberbatch! The first scene he had you only hear his voice and you start to shiver... I have been following his works since 2006 and I couldn't be happier that people started recognizing his talent thanks to Sherlock. I sure hope he gets more roles playing villains. I also enjoyed the fact that I just couldn't hate him. He was still so charismatic and although he clearly went nuts toward the end - I still wanted justice for him. It might also be because I hate the actor who played the Admiral... But I loved Kirk and I also cried when he died, but still... "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!"
I was actually expecting that line throughout the whole movie and it was placed very wisely and it added to the story just what it needed! I honestly hope he returns because he was a great adversary to Kirk - Chris Pine in this movie really transformed the role for himself and you could feel him moving freely in the character and making the viewer care a lot more for him and his crew. The third movie I think will be wonderful if Abrams doesn't rush it so hats off to him for making such great casting choices four years ago!
The last thing that should not go unmentioned was the CGI: WOW! I am very often disturbed by the bad green screens and the extra effects that are not needed. This movie didn't have any technical faults, not to mention that the 3D worked perfectly. This was the first movie in which I didn't feel that it was too dark and I couldn't make out anything or that it was all just an extra filter for those 2 seconds of film where something moves into the audience's direction!

Overall this was a wonderful movie. The music score is beautiful and it accompanies the story wonderfully - I'm going the buy it the minute I get home! So watch it, don't watch it? I'll let it be your choice. If you know the old series you will probably be more influenced but if you are like me - an outsider, lover of the first movie, then trust me you are going to enjoy it! Totally worth the theatre ticket price!

Until the next item on my list!

PS: It just turned out that Abrams cut a showering scene of Cumberbatch from the movie! What the hell?! Nobody cared about the women in underwear, yet we had two of those scenes! Good plan overall, now you made me want to buy the DVD even more, but seriously, why did you cut it? :(

What's Next On My List? The Dictator

Recently I watched a great movie:

Before we head in, I need to admit that I don't particularly care for the characters that Sacha Baron Cohen portrays. I do laugh my ass of sometimes and I find him to be and excellent actor - let there be no mistake about that. But sometimes I think he takes it a bit too far into the disgusting department. Even this movie had a couple of things that I didn't really need in order to enjoy it, but it was such a great social commentary that I wanted to talk about it!

Let me copy in the plot summary from imdb: The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.
That really says it all. Basically, his uncle who was in line for the throne was then replaced by Dictator Aladeen of the country of Wadiya. Once, during a trip to the US to meet the United Nation, his uncle tries to get him killed and replaces him with a double. Aladeen survives and meets up with people he had believed to had executed and one of them helps him in getting back his place. However, he meets a young girl who changes his mind into choosing democracy after all (or at least it seems that way...)

The movie is incredibly racist and handles stereotypes in a really offensive way and guess what? It works. It completely shifts the balance and instead of being actually offensive it just becomes hilarious. Many and many countries lack the ability to laugh at themselves - my dear Hungary being one of them as well - and this movie tries to shed some light onto it. Starting from the stereotype that just because a man's skin is a bit darker and they have a beard it doesn't immediately make them a terrorist! Not to mention this constant threat of other countries developing nuclear weapons... to be honest with you to me it completely feels like a pissing contest over who has the biggest dick!
Either way, the movie also stands out for its fantastic jokes and perfectly timed comedy. There are constant references to other movies, cultures and even viral videos. I loved the acting on the part of the leads as well as the side characters. Overall, it was one of the best social commentary movies I have seen in a long time. I would like to share with you a monologue that Aladeen has toward the end of the movie - not only you'll find the irony and you'll be able to read between the lines - but you might also recognize your own country's governments description in it. I know I did!

"Why are you guys so anti dictators?
Imagine if America was a dictatorship. You could let 1% of the people have all the nation's wealth. You could help your rich friends get richer by cutting their taxes and bailing them out when they gamble and lose. You could ignore the needs of the poor for health care and education. Your media would appear free but would secretly be controlled by one person and his family. You could wiretap phones, you could torture foreign prisoners. You could have rigged elections. You could lie about why you go to war. You could fill your prisons with one particular racial group and no one would complain! You could use the media to scare the people into supporting policies that are against their interests. I know this is hard for you Americans to imagine, but please try."

Make sure you check out this movie, it won't disappoint! But I suggest getting subtitles for it just to be on the safe side!
Until the next item on my list!

The Blogger

Dear Readers,

I am introducing a new segment. You know, I barely use my blog for personal entries - even though expressing opinions about movies is also very personal. Either way, there are several things I have always wanted to talk about. For example, the fact that 'hating' something seems to become a new trend that brings people together. Also, topics like how Harry Potter books are better than movies (for me, it is the other way around).

At the university there is one thing I have learned: If you don't have an argument for your opinion, then your opinion doesn't really matter. It is said, but also very true. That's one of the reasons why I like movie reviews so much. I enjoy fighting for my opinion. My aim is to make sure that people don't take my reviews as angry rants from a young girl. (Well, for the exception of the What The F*ck Is This Sh*t? entries.)
That is why I would like to express my opinion in a more formal way, rather than blabbering on and on about stuff. Hopefully, I'll give people something to talk about and or wish to discuss with me.

The new segment will be called 'Blogger'. I plan my first entry very-very soon, beforehand a couple more reviews coming up. Stay tuned!

And thank you all for your support! I can't believe we are above 40,000 views! As soon as the exam period is over, I'll be back with a lot to say and a lot to dissect.
Spread the word ;)
